The original Bulleit Bourbon was founded by Augustine Bulleit, a visionary tavern keeper who disappeared in the 1830s while transporting barrels of his spirit across the southern US. He experimented with various small batches, trying out a wide variety of styles and tastes until he settled upon the right blend. What happened to him is still unknown, but in 1987, his great-great-grandson Tom Bulleit carried out his lifelong dream – he revived the family legacy by creating the current incarnation of Bulleit Bourbon. Inspired by the old recipe, Bulleit is made up of 95% rye and 5% malted barley, plus special strains of yeast. This high rye content helps create the complex, spicy flavours, as well as a clean, smooth finish. Kentucky limestone-filtered water provides the backbone for the bourbon, and charred American oak barrels lend a smoky edge to the bourbon. In 2011, as a recognition of the craftsmanship that goes into making every batch, Bulleit Bourbon won gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition
Bulleit Bourbon is delicious sipped neat or over a little ice and a range of mixers including cola, lemonade, ginger ale and soda. It’s also ideal as a fantastic base for classic cocktails, such as a Bourbon Sour with lemon juice, sugar syrup and egg white, and an Old Fashioned, the stirred cocktail with a sugar cube soaked in Angostura Bitters that is the ideal showcase for Bulleit Bourbon.
